Pacific Coast Chapter Archive

The Chapter Archive consists of several large photographic and documentary collections, donated by members and their survivors. In addition to photograph and negative collections, the Chapter has timetables, posters, books, and many other items of railroad memorabilia.

Cataloging of the various collections in the Chapter’s Archive has only gotten underway in recent years. Cataloging the Fred A. Stindt collection of locomotive photos is now complete, consisting of over 13,000 images.

Mr. Fred Stindt was one of the founders and Charter Member of the Pacific Coast Chapter. He served over 40 years in the positions of leadership in the Chapter and for the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. Mr. Stindt endeavored to photograph and collect photos of every steam and diesel locomotive operated by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The Fred A. Stindt Collection of negatives centers primarily on Southern Pacific and Texas & New Orleans locomotives, both steam and diesel. The collection also includes photos of SP motorcars, SP Narrow Gauge locomotives and cars, Western Pacific steam and Central American locomotives, some rolling stock, structures, and a few action photos. The steam and early diesel portraits are in black & white, from 116 negatives. Some later diesel photos are available in color from 35mm film.

Still to be cataloged are the Francis Guido and the Gilbert Kneiss collections. Mr. Guido was a co-founder and long-time editor & publisher of The Western Railroader. In his will he stipulated that his collections and The Western Railroader were to be entrusted to the Pacific Coast Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. Mr. Guido took, and collected, many photographs of train excursions sponsored by the Chapter and others, as well as trains from many of the western railroads.

The Gilbert Kneiss collection offers a variety of items. Mr. Kneiss did much research on the early western railroads with a focus on Northern California. In the process of researching the history he collected many early photographs as well as written materials.

Prints are now available from the Fred A. Stindt collection. The negatives are scanned and digitally enhanced as needed. The image is printed on high quality gloss paper.
